SHAVATHON – CANSA 2011

It has become a proud tradition for Khanyisa staff and learners to run their own Shavathon at school. This year was no different. Although fewer heads were shaved this year there was no shortage of coloured hair on the day. Like many other years, learners let the creative juices flow and some created spectacular works of art on their friends’ heads.

Unlike other years, the Shavathon took a much more personal meaning for us here at school. Cancer has indeed made its presence felt in our community during the past year. Firstly Mr. Hewitson was diagnosed with cancer during July last year. He has not returned to school since then and is getting treatment in Cape Town. After a long stint in hospital he is making good progress. In February this year Mrs. Cumming’s husband was also diagnosed with cancer and is now receiving treatment in Polokwane. Various other learners and members of staff have also had family members affected by various forms of the disease during the past 18 months.

And that is why we do this every year.

We managed to raise around R10 000 rand and we would like to thank everyone who took part in this very important event.

Khanyisa not only prides itself on strong academic results, but also the overall development of its learners. Many of our learners have made their mark in other areas.

Khanyisa has had learners participate in the Cathay Pacific World Wildlife Experience hosted in South Africa every year between 2001 and 2005.

2006	Nyiko Mavundza	11	Bronze Medal at National YEP Competition at Spier (Western Cape) on behalf of his team.
2006	Danisa Nkuna	12	She represented South Africa in the London International Youth Science Forum in London
2005	Vukea Ishmael	11	He was invited to the International Cathy Pacific Wilderness Experience in 2005
2004	Beaula Masungwini	11	She was invited to the International Cathy Pacific Wilderness Experience in 2004
2003	Humbu Dombo	12	Humbu managed to get A’s for all her six subjects, i.e. : English L1; Afrikaans L2; Mathematics HG; Physical Science HG; Biology HG and Geography HG. A truly spectacular performance, placing her 6th on overall aggregate in the province.
2003	Cynthia Hlungwane	12	Finalist in the Score Young Community Shapers. Her reward for reaching the finals, is a computer for herself and the school, a R10 000 bursary and R2000 towards the community project she is involved in. She also won food packs and other staff which the school donated to local charities.
2001	Basani Mathye	11	Basani went to New York, USA as an exchange student. The trip was sponsored by The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. She spent a whole semester staying with an American Family and had lots of fun.
2000	The Enviro-Club		Mkateko Khosa, Nkateko Holeni, Hatlani Mhinga, Hlayani Chabalala – Represented the school in the Enviro – 2000 Energy-In-Action Competition. They won the school R5000.00 and an Electro-Wise Educational Kit. They also appeared a TV program 50/50 on SABC 2, and were also mentioned in the magazine African Wildlife.
1999	Felix Chauke	11	Selected to play for the South African Basketball Team in the Cossafa Cup Finals. The team won by beating Mozambique, and as a result, they became the Cassafa Champions.
1999	Ntsako Mlambo	10	Won the National Essay Competition organised by the Department of Education and other sponsors. Ntsako won a weeklong trip to London for herself and her mother. She also won a selection of books for the school library. Click here, to read her winning essay!
1998	Tiyani Maluleke	12	Won the National Essay Competition organised by READ. Tiyani won a fortnight long trip to London for herself and her mother. She also won a selection of book vouchers for herself.
1996	Yvone Dombo	10	Was selected to go to France for the year on the STS High School as an exchange student.
1995	Nkhesani Rikhotso	12	Won an English Essay competition and had the opportunity to meet Queen Elizabeth when she visited South Africa.

Academic excellence

From the very first small matric group in 1993, the school has consistently performed very well. For only two years in its history since 1993 has the school failed to record a 100% pass rate (see the table of results below). What has been truly outstanding is the not just the pass rate, but the level of access to tertiary education that the school has provided for its learners.
